Beeramisu! Delicious and the surprise judge’s pick for best dessert.
As you walk into the Bell House, an event venue along the Gowanus Canal, you’re overwhelmed by close to 30 food stations serving everything from beer-boiled peanuts to beer-injected pulled pork sandwiches, and from s’mores with chocolate cherry beer truffles to beeramisu. You’re sure that the beef short ribs on a tortilla chip with chipotle aioli and lime are the best dish you’ve tried until you move onto the next station and try the chocolate-beer chili.
It was easy to be overwhelmed by the eclectic array of beer-infused and inspired appetizers, entrees, desserts, and cocktails available for sampling at the Brooklyn Beer Experiment yesterday. The only rule: Each dish had to incorporate beer in some way (and many utilized other liquor ingredients as well). Besides the cook-off, nine contestants entered the brew-off, each producing 5 gallons of unique home brews encompassing everything from a mocha stout to a lemony pale ale.
Judges included representatives from Beer Table, the Brooklyn Brewery, and Smuttynose, as well as surprise dessert judge Johnny Iuzzini (!!). All proceeds went to benefit ovarian cancer research. Check out some of my favorite dishes plus the winners after the jump. Stay tuned for future Brooklyn Food Experiments coming in the fall, including the Brooklyn Cheese Experiment and the Brooklyn Chinese Takeout Experiment.
