I have a really hard time getting into shows like Top Chef and Next Food Network Star. As much as I love learning about food, ingredients, and preparation, it’s hard for me to really appreciate the masterpieces those chefs are concocting. As much as the judges praise, I really can’t get a good idea of the flavors and textures unless I can actually try the food myself.
Bravo and Food Network should take a hint from the NYC Food Film Festival, in its third year now. The festival involves screenings of short films every night, starting with the gala opening tomorrow night. More importantly, each evening of entertainment - which will be free to all (excluding the gala) - offers the opportunity to try some of the delicious dishes shown in the films.
Highlights include a mushroom tasting menu, BBQ mutton, a buttermilk-themed evening, and gumbo, to name a few. Screenings are every night through next Friday at the Water Taxi Beaches in Long Island City and South Street Seaport, as well as Astor Center. For more information, be sure to visit the film festival’s site.
