Genesis Bar: Beyond the Burger

Genesis burger

The Upper East Side has its fair share of bro bars and burger joints, with carbon copy menus that rarely vary from block to block. One surprising standout, however, is Genesis Bar on 2nd Ave and 89th St.

The burger list is a pamphlet-sized insert in the regular menu, but what it lacks in width, it more than makes up for in breadth. All burgers consist of a 1/2-pound of black angus beef on a toasted bun, and variations on the standard include the Italian (topped with pancetta and melted mozzarella, and drizzled with basil pesto), the Bulls-Eye (covered in bulls-eye steak sauce and topped with sauteed onions and jalapenos), and the Hawaiian (with barbecue sauce, ham, grilled pineapple, and melted Swiss cheese). It only takes one glance at the menu to figure out what I ordered: the Genesis, of course. Served with blue cheese, frizzled onions, and, most importantly, chorizo, it was the obvious choice. The burger was delicious of course (it had chorizo on it, so it was guaranteed to be good), but oh so heavy. Don’t come for dinner here if you have a physical coming up, but if you don’t mind sending your cholesterol skyrocketing, Genesis’ deluxe burgers won’t disappoint.

Frites ‘n Meats: Living Up to Its Two-Pronged Name

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Frites N Meats

It’s no secret that we’re big fans of burgers. Even burgers from trucks. But Frites ‘N Meats gave us something we hadn’t experienced before: burgers from trucks with attitude! With buns from Balthazar, cheeses from Murray’s, and a myriad of toppings, your burger could be anything from classic to entirely off-the-wall, and it will be utterly delicious either way. It won’t break the bank, either - the basic burger starts at just $5.50 ($7.50 for “American Kobe”) with fixin’s clocking in at 75 cents each. On my visit, I went for a slice of gruyere and “garlicky guacamole.” The meat was juicy, cooked to a nice medium, and the garlicky guacamole packed a real punch. It must be said that Nicole’s burger was a bit too well done and not nearly as juicy as mine, so it might be a good idea to specify how you like yours when you order. Though the burger was great, it certainly didn’t overshadow the tasty frites ($3)! While they’re not the same thick, greasy ones you’ll find downtown at Pommes Frites, that’s probably a good thing when you’re eating on the go, food truck-style. They’re thin without being too thin, crispy but not to the point of ruining those soft, yummy potato innards. The truck also offers an array of dipping sauces as accompaniments, at 50 cents each (including the delicious spicy chili aioli we sampled). And while many food trucks tend to stick to one location, Frites ‘N Meats moves around during the week so midtown and downtown workers alike will have a chance to enjoy!

Shake Shack: It’s What’s for Lunch

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Whether you’re a burger person or you go crazy for the bird dog, there’s no denying that Shake Shack is one of the best lunches in the ‘hood. If it weren’t for that pesky line…

Starting today, you’ll be able to bypass that horrific wait. That’s right, Shake Shack’s taking phone orders so you can call ahead for lunch. Just phone in your picks and the Shack staff will tell you when to swing by and pick up your lunch. The lines are open starting at 10am, with the first pickup at 11am. Give ‘em a call at 212-889-6600. And be sure to take a stroll past the ridiculous line with your meal. Whatever you’ve ordered, is guaranteed to taste that much sweeter minus the wait.

Rum and Blackbird: Our Favorite Kind of City Tour

Friday, December 4th, 2009

We all know that the bill on a dinner out in New York can often accidentally run up to the $50 mark, but when was the last time that amount bought you a meal from not one, but seven different restaurants? This Saturday and Sunday at 11:30am and 3pm, Rum and Blackbird Tasting Tours is giving you just that chance (for $49 to be exact) and for your money you’ll be treated to a three-hour, seven-stop culinary tour of Hell’s Kitchen, a neighborhood all too often reserved for pre-theatre dinners and under-appreciated for its plethora of worthy dining establishments.

Stops along the two-mile path include La Rosita, Gazala Place, Empanada Mama, Island Burgers & Shakes, Poseidon Bakery, Biscotti di Vecchio, and City Dish favorite Xie Xie. At each restaurant, participants will get to pick the brains of owners and chefs and get a much more detailed insight into the food they’re sampling than they would had they simply ordered it off the menu. Walks between restaurants will be just as educational, as Rum and Blackbird’s tour guides are well versed in the neighborhood’s history, culinary and otherwise.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it right away though. This is just the debut of an ongoing series of food walking tours that extend through the end of the month. But if you’re hungry for food and adventure this weekend, here’s a unique opportunity to get your fill of both!

Gus and Gabriel: Take in Your Favorite Sport, Gastropub Style

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Typically, a sports bar trying to pack in fans for a game will do so with promises of cheap domestic pitchers and buffalo wings, with the knowledge that in most cases the game is far more important than its accompanying food and drink. Happily enough, however, Upper West Side gastropub Gus and Gabriel is offering a deal plenty enticing to those of us with intense passion for both the team and the grub.

Stop in during any game, and a measly $15 buys you an order of nachos, a hamburger, and a draft beer. These aren’t your neighborhood dive’s nachos and burger, either. At Gus and Gabriel, everything is made in-house and from scratch, from the ground beef to the relish. And with such eloquently-named brews on tap as “The Sword Swallower” and “Twisted Thistle” to accompany them, this meal is bound to blow your standard sports grub out of the water.

So while your team might lose the game, your taste buds will emerge victorious.

Patty & Bun: A Work In Progress

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Patty and Bun

As I was getting my daily fix of nymag.com, I came across an article promoting Patty & Bun (P&B), the new and appropriately named burger spot in the village. Glancing at the menu, I knew I had to visit, not because I am a burger person but because they had what looked like amazing mac and cheese. Cheddar, goat and sheep’s cream cheese? Yes, please!

So off I went with a friend in tow. The restaurant had a fresh, yet intimate vibe, complete with low lighting, dark wood decor and the smell of recent construction. Once seated, I decided to try one of their patties and buns, ordering the cremini-stuffed turkey burger with guacamole spread ($10), and the highly-anticipated mac and cheese ($9) on the side. My friend got the P & B burger deluxe with fries ($14). When our meals came, they looked beautiful, except I realized our waitress gave me fries when I didn’t ask for them. Curiosity and greediness got the best of me, as I told her to leave the plate as it was. The fries were just crunchy enough on the outside with great color, although not enough seasoning for my taste. However, after adding a little salt and pepper, they were good to go. And as someone who’s pretty apathetic about her burgers, I enjoyed my turkey burger more than I thought I would. The patty itself was cooked just right with a charred exterior and a light pink interior. But neither the fries nor the burger beat my beloved mac and cheese. Creamy, rich and topped with pieces of bacon, I was more than pleased with the dish. My only brief thought (as I hungrily consumed the bacon) was that they should mention bacon on the menu for all of the unsuspecting non-pork eaters out there. As for my friend, he enjoyed his burger and fries, polishing off every, and I mean every, last bite.

Overall, I genuinely liked my meal. Unfortunately, what I did not love as much was the service. The fries mishap was not a big deal, although when there is a $4 difference between the regular meal and the deluxe, it never hurts to repeat the order back to the patron. Also, several more service-related incidents occurred throughout the night that could have been avoided. New Yorkers are a critical bunch, especially to restaurants that are not yet established, so good food, and good service, is a must. Luckily, Patty & Bun has potential. Whether it lives up to that potential remains to be seen.

Click through for pictures of a meal that was, if not entirely perfect, definitely satisfying.

Murray Hill: Bidding a Fond Farewell with Some Old Favorites

Friday, November 13th, 2009

I’ve been blessed to work in Murray Hill for the last two-plus years, enjoying the wonderful culinary diversity of the surrounding neighborhood. Lunch is a big deal at my office and we make an effort to make the rounds of the local eateries, sampling everything from Indian to Italian and from sushi to schnitzel. Today I bid the neighborhood adieu before I head off to join the ranks of Midtown East lunchers next week. To pay my proper respects to Murray Hill, I’ve rounded up my favorite lunch places, all of which I will dearly miss.

Check out my top 10 after the jump.

Building on Bond: A Burger Lover’s Dream Come True

BoB Burger

Ever dream about your ideal meal? You know, all the ingredients you love combined into a perfect dish that leaves you utterly satisfied. Well, if I did, I’d probably dream of something like the BoB burger from Building on Bond. The BoB burger takes that American classic (already a favorite of mine) and adds tiny pieces of chorizo to the ground beef for an incredibly rich and juicy patty. But wait, there’s more! This succulent bit of goodness can be topped with gooey melted cheese and is served on a toasted pretzel bun. Does it get any better than that? I think not.

I sampled this transcendent dish at yesterday’s Atlantic Antic street fair and it left me eager for more of the clever bar snacks on Building on Bond’s small but innovative menu, like the bourbon wings, the pistachio-crusted chicken, or the BBQ pork sandwich served with red pepper aioli and apple-jicama slaw. Perhaps one of them will make my dream menu too, but the competition will be stiff. That incredible burger will be hard to beat.

New York Hot Dog & Coffee: Who Doesn’t Love Free Lunch?

NYHDC Kimchi Burger
via New York Hot Dog & Coffee

And a creative one at that! Korean-American hybrid New York Hot Dog & Coffee is investing in you, dear eater, this September with its mid-week lunch giveaways. This Wednesday starting at 12:30 p.m., the first 100 hungry mouths to show up will be fed with a free kimchi bulgogi burger (pictured above, normally $6.99).

What is this bulgogi you speak of, you ask? Turns out it’s a traditional Korean-style BBQ marinated beef, and something I’d be very interested to try in the shape of a hamburger! So if you work downtown, you’re in luck. Head over early and make the most of your humpday lunch hour!

Make sure to check the restaurant’s Twitter for updates on future giveaways.

Good Stuff Eatery: City Dish on the Road

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Good Stuff Eatery
via Dakota Fine Photography

Living in a food mecca as we do, it’s often all too easy to forget that yes, extraordinary meals can indeed be found elsewhere. So this weekend, as both of your faithful, fearless City Dish writers were down south in Washington, D.C., we thought we’d prove it to you. On Saturday night, we stopped in at Good Stuff Eatery, a burger joint owned by Spike Mendelsohn, of Top Chef and general hat-wearing fame. And since Michelle Obama thought the place worthy of her patronage, we figured it probably deserved ours as well.

The burger list is impressive. Purists will enjoy the selection of handcrafted “farmhouse” burgers, which can be had on their own, or with cheese and/or bacon. But Spike and company have also worked hard to create a series of specialty burgers not to be missed. Personally, I went with the “Prez Obama Burger,” which is topped with applewood bacon, rocquefort cheese, pickled red onions, and horseradish mayo. I also opted for free-range chicken rather than beef. DBGB aside, I’ve rarely had a more delicious burger or chicken sandwich. The combination of flavors rocked my world, the horseradish and rocquefort complementing each other flawlessly. Nicole sprung for Colletti’s Smokehouse Burger, which also comes crowned with applewood bacon, along with cheddar cheese, onion rings, and chipotle BBQ sauce. Winner of the People’s Choice Award, along with many others, at Rachael Ray’s Burger Fest at the South Beach Food & Wine Festival, this one is not to be missed.

Another true highlight of our meal? The fries! Spike’s “village fries” rank among the best I’ve ever had (and I’ve had my share of Pommes Frites). These perfectly-textured delights are tossed with fresh thyme, rosemary, and cracked pepper, and as if that weren’t enough, there are several daring and delicious dipping sauces on hand such as chipotle mayo, Old Bay mayo, and our favorite, sriracha mayo!

Long story short, next time you’re in D.C., wandering the streets around the capitol building, feeling the obligatory patriotism that building inspires, just remember that there’s a darn good American meal to be had right around the corner!
