Brooklyn Roots Experiment: Plenty of Local Flavor

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

We here at City Dish are big fans of the Brooklyn Experiment competitions, and we’ve pretty much attended every major cook-off event at the Bell House in recent memory. But we’re particularly intrigued by the newest challenge, announced last week.

The only rule for the Brooklyn Roots Experiment is that the dish has to exemplify local cuisine. That means it either features a Brooklyn-grown ingredient, an ingredient created in Brooklyn, or has some historical or cultural significance for the borough. You can learn more about the event, which is taking place on September 12th in conjunction with the Farm City Fair, on the Food Experiments site. Be sure to note that the latest competition is taking place at a new venue as well: Invisible Dog Art Center at 51 Bergen Street. I already have my ticket and I can’t wait to sample that best that my home base borrough has to offer!

Seersucker: Your New Tuesday Tradition

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

It’s Tuesday, folks, and you know what that means: you’re craving fried chicken! OK, maybe not automatically, but you sure will be when you learn about Seersucker’s weekly meal deal. The spanking-new modern Southern eatery is now offering an $18 fried chicken dinner every single Tuesday. “Dinner” may in fact be an understatement — the meal includes half a fried chicken, buttermilk dipping sauce, white bread, slaw, and black-eyed peas. Heck, that’s not just a Tuesday dinner deal. Sounds like there will be plenty left over for a hearty Wednesday lunch as well!

Dine in Brooklyn: Deals Are Just a Subway Ride Away

Monday, March 15th, 2010

If you’re a Brooklynite, likely you’ve been looking forward to our borough’s version of Restaurant Week (RW, for short) for some time now. If you’re not, get out your metrocard and tie on a pair of walking shoes. It’s field trip time!

As fun as Manhattan’s storied RW is, the deals can’t hold a candle to Brooklyn’s $20.10 brunches and lunches and $25 dinners. All meals are the same three courses as their Manhattan brethren and offered at an equally diverse group of dining establishments.

The one knock on Brooklyn RW is the difficulty we had in finding any menus. Regardless, a number of City Dish favorites are participating, including La Lunetta in Carroll Gardens, Stan’s Place in Boerum Hill, and al di la Trattoria, La Taqueria, Chip Shop, Rose Water, all in Park Slope. Unlike Manhattan’s never-ending bacchanal, Brooklyn RW starts today and only lasts until March 25. Whether you’re going for a tried and true favorite, or checking out an intriguing looking establishment, get ready for some fine dining, RW-style.

La Lunetta: Brilliant Bruschetta, and That’s Just the Beginning

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

La Lunetta ricotta bruschetta

Sometimes it’s the most innocuous of dishes that make or break a meal. In the case of Carroll Gardens spot La Lunetta, your whole experience will be made by their phenomenal bruschetta. My dining companion and I asked our server for advice, and she steered us toward the ricotta bruschetta with honey and lemon, the perfect combination of creamy rich cheese, with a tangy, citrusy bite. Besides the aforementioned honey and lemon (the latter of which is actually incorporated into the cheese during its creation so it infuses every bite), the bruschetta is sprinkled with fresh ground pepper, for a hint of spice.

That wonderful appetizer is a hard act to follow, but all of La Lunetta’s dishes will leave you satisfied. The meatballs were rich and dense, with just a hint of sweetness from what appeared to be raisins incorporated inside. To be honest, I despise raisins as a general rule, but here they didn’t bother me, and actually added a welcome hin of flavor to the already complex dish. The tagliatelle was wonderfully satisfying as well. The dessert list wasn’t terribly enticing (just a list of standards, with no standouts), so don’t waste a bite saving room for that course. And you won’t want to hold off, once you get started on the fantastic comfort food. La Lunetta might be easy to overlook situated as it is on a veritable restaurant row, but you’ll be happy you didn’t.

More pictures from our meal after the jump!

Philippine Independence Day Festival
What: In amongst the marching bands, rock bands, and parade floats, your nose will lead you to the line of stands along both sides of Madison Avenue, offering such delicious wares as fresh-off-the-grill meat skewers and pork belly, and more adventurous eaters can sample such things as fried “pork ruffle fat” or opt for skewers of spicy fish balls rather than chicken or beef. You, too, will be grateful the Philippines ousted the Spanish in June 1898!

Where: Madison Avenue between 24th and 26th Streets

Free* NYC Dessert Fest
What: June’s installment of this monthly walking tour will take place in Chelsea, where participants will be guided to the best the ‘hood has to offer, with such possibilities as coconut cupcakes and old-fashioned doughnuts. The asterisk above is just a caveat that in order to take part, the organizers kindly request a minimum $5 donation to the New York Food Bank (but come on, as a food-lover, this has got to be a cause you can get behind). See here for payment information.
When: Sunday, June 7, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Where: Meet the tour guide outside Billy’s Bakery at 184 9th Avenue (between 21st and 22nd Sts.)

Where: Starts at the Museum at Eldridge Street (12 Eldridge Street, between Canal and Division)

BKLYN Yard’s Yard Party

Your $18 ticket gets you one free professionally-brewed brewsky (have I used that word enough yet?) from Brooklyn Brewery or Smuttynose, along with the opportunity to taste the creations of 25 amatueur chefs and brewers. Take it a bit easy on the latter, though, as your carefully thought-out vote will help the judges decide who gets crowned Brooklyn’s king or queen of the brown stuff. (Tune in for our coverage of the BBE on Monday.)
When: Sunday, June 7, 1 - 5 p.m.
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Aves.), Brooklyn
