With the rain likely to be done doing its mischief by Saturday morning, it’s shaping up to be the perfect weekend to enjoy the sunshine along with some intriguing snacks and fellow foodies. Luckily, this weekend is simply bursting with free and cheap foodie events citywide! To name a few…
Philippine Independence Day Festival
What: In amongst the marching bands, rock bands, and parade floats, your nose will lead you to the line of stands along both sides of Madison Avenue, offering such delicious wares as fresh-off-the-grill meat skewers and pork belly, and more adventurous eaters can sample such things as fried “pork ruffle fat” or opt for skewers of spicy fish balls rather than chicken or beef. You, too, will be grateful the Philippines ousted the Spanish in June 1898!
When: Sunday, June 7, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Where: Madison Avenue between 24th and 26th Streets
Free* NYC Dessert Fest
What: June’s installment of this monthly walking tour will take place in Chelsea, where participants will be guided to the best the ‘hood has to offer, with such possibilities as coconut cupcakes and old-fashioned doughnuts. The asterisk above is just a caveat that in order to take part, the organizers kindly request a minimum $5 donation to the New York Food Bank (but come on, as a food-lover, this has got to be a cause you can get behind). See here for payment information.
When: Sunday, June 7, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Where: Meet the tour guide outside Billy’s Bakery at 184 9th Avenue (between 21st and 22nd Sts.)
Egg Rolls and Egg Creams Festival
What: This annual street fair, which runs along Eldridge Street, celebrates the geographical proximity of the Chinese and Jewish communities in Chinatown and the Lower East Side, respectively. Along with what’s sure to be delicious food from both cultures, visitors can take in some music and dancing performances and even get a Chinese or Yiddish language lesson.
When: Sunday, June 7, noon - 4 p.m.
Where: Starts at the Museum at Eldridge Street (12 Eldridge Street, between Canal and Division)
BKLYN Yard’s Yard Party
What: An outdoor dinner and dance party on the Gowanus canal, featuring DJs Finger on the Pulse, and what you’re probably most interested in, Asian BBQ by Hapa Kitchen and desserts by the Treats Truck. Getting your groove on is free and getting your foodie on will set you back a mere $7 per plate.
When: Saturday, June 6, 6 - 9 p.m.
Where: BKLYN Yards, 400 Carroll Street (between Bond and Nevins Sts.), Brooklyn

Brooklyn Beer Experiment
What: Help Brooklynites discover who among us makes the best homemade brew, and the best dish made with brew! Your $18 ticket gets you one free professionally-brewed brewsky (have I used that word enough yet?) from Brooklyn Brewery or Smuttynose, along with the opportunity to taste the creations of 25 amatueur chefs and brewers. Take it a bit easy on the latter, though, as your carefully thought-out vote will help the judges decide who gets crowned Brooklyn’s king or queen of the brown stuff. (Tune in for our coverage of the BBE on Monday.)
When: Sunday, June 7, 1 - 5 p.m.
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Aves.), Brooklyn

Muslim Voices Festival — Souk
What: The Muslim Voices Festival, which has been going on since June 6, transforms BAM into a stateside souk, complete with musical performances, arts and crafts, and of course, food! Over 150 vendors will be on hand at what’s sure to be a much more fun marketplace than your neighborhood farmers’ market.
When: Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, starting at noon
Where: BAM, Lafayette Ave. & Ashland Pl., Brooklyn
You’re welcome.
