Epicurious Entertains NYC: More Than Just Lunch

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

A delicious lunch is always great, but we here at City Dish like to look for a little something extra. This week’s Epicurious Entertains lunches offer just that. Many of them have been sold out for some time now, but Thursday’s “Intelligent Entertaining” lunch is still open. Learn about the art of hospitality from the likes of bad boy chef Johnny Iuzzini (of Jean-Georges fame) and mixologist Eben Klemm, director of cocktail development for the B. R. Guest Restaurant Group. For just $20 you’ll get a inside glimpse into the future of entertaining and we’re crossing our fingers that you’ll get to try out some of the chefs’ innovative creations too. Keep an eye out for City Dish contributors and yours truly soaking up some hospitality knowledge.

If you’re feeling a little splurgy, tickets are also available for Sunday’s $50 Fatty Crab-sponsored lunch where attendees will be able to sample offerings from the upcoming Fatty ‘Cue while watching Sunday’s games on big screen TVs.

David Burke at Bloomingdale’s: A Great Deal That Just Keeps Getting Better

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Last month we raved about the amazing four-course dinner deal David Burke at Bloomingdale’s offered in conjunction with Inocente Tequila. This month’s “Beverage Series Dinner” has only upped the ante.

For only $39 (plus tax and tip), you’ll be able to sample sumptuous dishes like yellowfin tuna ribbons and buttery lemongrass lobster paired with drinks based on Leblon Cachaca. We attended last month’s dinner and were treated to a number of surprises include fantastic hor d’oeuvres, plenty of good company, and an appearance by the man himself. Who knows what this next dinner has in store!

DBGB: The Only Place Where An $8 Hot Dog is Money Well Spent

Monday, August 31st, 2009

DBGB Dog

Since DBGB’s opening almost two months ago, the place has become a rousing success where it is often all-too difficult to snag a seat at prime dinner hours. After our wildly successful first visit, I was left curious about the DBGB Dog, which we didn’t have room to try during that meal.

As the least expensive item other than chopped salad on the menu, I worried that the dog wouldn’t be quite enough on its own. Boy, was I wrong. At about twice the size of your average hot dog, they’re not messing around with this one. The juicy all-beef “wiener” is made in-house, nestled in a deliciously sweet, bready bun atop sautéed onions, crowned with homemade relish and a slightly spicy ketchup.

Just one bite will silence the thrifty little voice in your head that protested, “$8? For a hot dog?!” And hey, since one of these beauties also comes with a basket of fries, it’s a rare opportunity to fill your belly for under $10 courtesy of Daniel Boulud.

David Burke at Bloomingdale’s: Tons of Tapas & Tequila

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

In this day and age, we get so many e-mails about recession specials and low-priced prix fixes, it’s enough to make our heads spin. Sometimes these meals are too good to pass up, like Butter’s 7th birthday celebration, while other “deals” are still dizzyingly expensive. File this next deal in the first category. It’s no secret that I have a massive food crush on David Burke, and when I saw the latest in the Beverage Series Dinners at David Burke at Bloomingdale’s, I honestly thought it was too good to be true.

Next Wednesday, this venerable chef is offering a four-course tasting menu paired with cocktails featuring Inocente Tequila. Now this isn’t your average, one-item-per-course tasting menu. This is more like a free-for-all. The meal will be served tapas style, with at least two amazing-sounding dishes per course. Offerings include mahi mahi shrimp and scallop ceviche, red snapper paella, and banana donuts with dulce de leche and jalapeño. The whole shebang (7 small plates, 2 desserts, and 4 cocktails) will set you back a measly $42 (plus tax and tip). Now that’s a deal we can’t miss!

DBGB: I’d Like to Thank the Recession

DBGB

Without Wall Street’s epic descent, Daniel Boulud’s family of New York restaurants might always have remained special-occasions-only material. Thankfully, though, today’s economic reality necessitates catering to the lower tax brackets, and restauranteurs like Boulud are doing quite well for themselves by changing with the times. With its unfinished chairs and open kitchen, this newest addition to the DB empire seems an ideal place for its relatively cheap and experimental cuisine.

DBGB is truly a dining experience unlike any other, transforming the conventional into something extraordinary. For a play-by-play of our fabulous meal, along with photographic evidence, click on!

DBGB: Foodie Alert!

DBGB Daniel Boulud
via Metromixthe man himself surveying his new domain and showcasing its offerings

If you aren’t a food geek like us, you probably haven’t heard the whispers, but a momentous day has arrived, friends. According to Grub Street, the spanking new Bowery eatery of Daniel Boulud, who is to Kim as David Burke is to Nicole, is not only open in friends and family mode, but is actually accepting walk-ins at the bar! And, since we are talking about a mid-recession opening, this warehouse-style space will be the most casual member of his small army of New York restaurants.

Our favorite charcuterie enthusiast has brought many varieties of sausage offerings to this new outpost, ranging from $11-$18 (or hot-dog style for just $8), a bargain by Boulud standards. He’s also (finally!) offering the public his take on the hamburger ($11-16). The rest of the menu is in classic Boulud style, though with less refined dishes than one might find uptown, such as fish & chips ($18) or tomato bisque ($9). And my distinguished co-blogger will most likely be drooling over the crab cake ($15). You can peruse the full menu, or check out Serious Eats’s coverage of the media preview, including some seriously crave-inducing photos of the food itself.

So go, check it out, and let us know what you think! Just be aware, until the official opening June 8th, the kitchen will only be open until 9:30 p.m., so come early, and hungry of course!

Daniel: Now Making It Easier to Impress Your Date

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Thought you could only walk through these fabled golden doors of culinary greatness when your wealthy relatives are in town? Wrong. Daniel Boulud, master French chef and all-around adorable guy, has at last joined the fray of restaurateurs adapting their offerings for the recession.

Monday through Thursday, visit the bar area after 9:30 p.m. and you can enjoy one of his delectable desserts, like a kaffir lime-infused mango or huckleberry and orange vacherin, paired with a glass of champagne for the comparatively bargain price of $25. Or for a truly special night, dine in the dining room on these same evenings between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. and the three-course prix fixe menu, including wine pairings, is yours for just $98 (normally $165).

So grab a hot date or a fellow fancy food enthusiast and enjoy this wonderful value that is truly worth either price tag.

David Burke: If he promises to make me crab cakes forever, I will happily bear his children

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Nicole + David Burke

Every chef has a Sistine Chapel. For David Burke, some might say it’s his inventive cheesecake lollipops with bubble gum foam or the sumptuous steaks at Primehouse. Those people would be wrong. Without a doubt, the man has a way with crab cakes. I’m a sucker for the dish, so I certainly couldn’t pass up his rich and delicious Maryland Crab Cake Panini (with Old Bay French fries and petite salad, $15.95) at David Burke at Bloomingdale’s. But the piece de resistance, without a doubt, is his Pretzel-Crusted Crab Cake ($18) at David Burke Townhouse (formerly davidburke & donatella’s). The description mentions that it comes with poppy seed honey and kumquat-jalapeno jam, but that really doesn’t do it justice. The dish is a solid block of crab meat held together by a perimeter of thin, crunchy pretzel sticks, with tomato confit on top and the honey and jam on either side, to alternately season your bites. The dish is a bit filling for an appetizer (I think you’re expected to share. A novel concept for me. I get greedy with crab cake.), and it’s far larger than anything you’d expect to see at a restaurant like Townhouse. The crab cake was lighter than any I’ve ever experienced and simply melted once I took the first bite, so the pretzels gave it a nice accompanying crunch. I was partial to the poppy seed honey, of the three accompaniments.

It’s been going on three months since I got my first taste, and David, honey, I can’t get it out of my head. There are still plenty of culinary frontiers for me to explore in New York so I suppose for now, I’ll just continue to dream about your delicious, generally out-of-my-reach restaurants. Oh wait, what’s that you say?  A $20 Sunday menu at Townhouse? I think this is true love.
